Match Report
Bolivia produced a gutsy second-half comeback to beat Suriname 2-1 in the World Cup intercontinental playoff semifinal at the BBVA Stadium in Monterrey. After a goalless first half, the underdogs struck first — but Bolivia had other ideas.
Liam van Gelderen gave Suriname a shock lead in the 48th minute, bundling home from close range after a defensive mix-up. The Caribbean side sensed an upset, but substitute Moisés Paniagua levelled in the 72nd minute with a sharp finish into the corner when it seemed he had no angle to shoot.
The turnaround was complete seven minutes later when Miguel Terceros coolly converted a 79th-minute penalty, awarded after a foul on fellow substitute Juan Godoy.
Bolivia now face Iraq on March 31 for a place at the 2026 World Cup, while Suriname's historic run comes to a heartbreaking end.
