Match Report

Sporting CP produced one of the great Champions League comebacks on Tuesday night, demolishing Bodø/Glimt 5-0 after extra time at the José Alvalade to overturn a 3-0 first-leg deficit. The Lisbon crowd was electric from the first whistle, and the hosts delivered a performance for the ages to advance 5-3 on aggregate. Gonçalo Inácio got the comeback rolling with a thumping header from a corner in the 34th minute. Pedro Gonçalves added a second on 61 minutes after a neat square ball from Luis Suárez, who then levelled the tie from the penalty spot in the 78th minute to send the stadium into delirium and force extra time. Maximiliano Araújo wasted no time in the additional period, striking just two minutes into extra time to put Sporting ahead on aggregate for the first time. Rafael Nel completed the rout in stoppage time of the second extra-time half. Sporting reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 1982-83, becoming only the fifth club in competition history to overturn a three-goal first-leg deficit. For Bodø/Glimt, a fairytale run ends in heartbreaking fashion.
