Sheffield United

Sheffield United Football Club, founded in 1889 as an offshoot of the Sheffield United Cricket Club and playing at Bramall Lane — the oldest major football ground in the world, dating to 1862 — won the First Division title in 1897-98 and lifted the FA Cup four times (1899, 1902, 1915, 1925) in their historic peak era. Sheffield, birthplace of association football, gave the club a unique place in the game's origins. In the modern era, manager Chris Wilder's innovative deployment of overlapping centre-backs in a 3-5-2 system earned widespread admiration during their 2019 Premier League promotion. After a difficult Premier League campaign in 2023-24, the club was relegated and underwent a reported £111 million takeover by American consortium COH Sports in December 2024. Currently competing in the EFL Championship, the Blades retain their identity as a working-class, community-rooted club with deep historical significance.
