Al Hilal
Al Hilal SFC — officially Al Hilal Saudi Football Club — is the most decorated football club in the history of Asian football and the undisputed standard-bearer of Saudi Arabian football. Founded on October 16, 1957, in Riyadh, under the patronage of Prince Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the club formally adopted its current name on December 2, 1958. The name Al Hilal means 'The Crescent' in Arabic, and the club's iconic blue and white colours have become synonymous with Saudi footballing excellence. From its earliest years in Riyadh's burgeoning football scene, Al Hilal quickly established itself as the dominant force in domestic competition, winning the inaugural Saudi Premier League championship and never relinquishing its status as the country's preeminent club. The Confederation of Asian Football (CAF's counterpart, the AFC) bestowed upon Al Hilal the title of Asian Club of the 20th Century — a recognition of their continental stature and long-term dominance. The trophy haul accumulated by Al Hilal is staggering. Domestically, the club holds the all-time record for Saudi Premier League titles, with 21 championships, in addition to 13 Saudi Crown Prince Cup trophies and 10 Saudi King Cup titles. On the continental stage, Al Hilal has won the AFC Champions League four times — a record for any Asian club — in 1992, 2000, 2019, and 2021. The club also became the first Asian team from a non-host nation to reach the FIFA Club World Cup final in 2023, where they faced Manchester City. Their stadium, the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, is a modern, purpose-built facility inaugurated in 2024 with a capacity of approximately 47,000, replacing the older Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium as the club's permanent home and providing a world-class matchday environment befitting a club of Al Hilal's ambitions. The Saudi Vision 2030 initiative and the government's investment in the Saudi Pro League transformed Al Hilal into a global transfer destination starting in 2023. The club made international headlines with the signing of Brazilian superstar Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported €90 million fee, though injuries cruelly limited his appearances to just seven matches. Other high-profile acquisitions followed, including Serbia's Aleksandar Mitrovic, goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, and Malcom — who was pivotal in the club's record-breaking unbeaten run of 34 matches between September 2023 and April 2024. Long-serving Saudi international players such as Yasser Al-Shahrani and Mohammed Al-Breik have embodied the club's local identity, while coach Jorge Jesus oversaw an era of Champions League dominance within Asia. Today, Al Hilal remains Saudi Arabia's most-watched, most-supported club, with a passionate fanbase spanning the entire Gulf region and a clear ambition to be recognised among the elite clubs of world football.
