Newcastle United Football Club, founded in 1892 through the merger of two local clubs and playing at St James' Park — a 52,305-capacity stadium dominating the city centre skyline and generating one of English football's most ferocious atmospheres — had their greatest era in the first half of the 20th century, winning four league titles and six FA Cups.
