AFC Bournemouth, known as the Cherries owing to their distinctive red and black striped shirts and their home ground's location in an area once covered with cherry orchards, was founded in the autumn of 1899 from the remains of Boscombe St. John's Institute Football Club. Initially named Boscombe FC, the club competed in local leagues around the Dorset and Hampshire area from the very beginning, representing the seaside town of Bournemouth and the neighboring suburb of Boscombe. In 1910, the club received a significant gift: a piece of land from the prominent local Cooper-Dean family on which Dean Court — still the club's home today — would be built. The ground was ready by December 1910, though facilities were so basic that players initially had to change in a nearby hotel. The club became Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in 1923 before finally adopting the current name AFC Bournemouth in 1971. For most of their history, Bournemouth were a lower-league club operating in the third and fourth tiers of English football, but a remarkable rise beginning in the 2010s transformed them into a Premier League fixture. Under manager Eddie Howe, who served two spells in charge of the club and is deeply associated with its identity, Bournemouth won the Football League Championship in the 2014–15 season to earn promotion to the Premier League for the first time in their history — a genuinely historic moment for a club that had never previously played in the top flight. Howe became one of the most respected young managers in English football as a result, eventually leaving for Newcastle United in 2021. Bournemouth briefly suffered relegation in 2020 but won the Championship again in 2021–22 under Scott Parker to return to the top division. The appointment of Andoni Iraola as head coach in June 2023 brought a new dimension to the club's Premier League identity. The former Athletic Club defender from the Basque Country brought an intense, pressing-based style of play that transformed Bournemouth into one of the most energetic and tactically interesting teams in English football. In the 2023–24 season, the Cherries accumulated 48 Premier League points to finish 12th — their best total to that point. The 2024–25 season saw them surpass that record, achieving 56 points and equalling their best-ever Premier League finish of 9th, an outstanding achievement for a club of their resources. The club made headlines in the 2024 transfer window when striker Dominic Solanke departed for Tottenham Hotspur for a club-record £65 million, and Bournemouth reinvested in Evanilson from FC Porto for £40.2 million. The Vitality Stadium (Dean Court), the club's home ground since 1910 in the Boscombe suburb of Bournemouth, has a current capacity of approximately 11,307 — making it one of the smallest grounds in the Premier League — but it carries deep emotional significance for the club's supporters. The ground was fully rebuilt in 2001 with the pitch rotated 90 degrees from its original position. Despite the modest capacity, the atmosphere on matchdays is fierce and the club commands remarkable loyalty from its fanbase in Dorset. Bournemouth's story is one of the most inspiring in recent English football: a provincial seaside club that punched far above its weight to establish itself as a Premier League regular, driven by smart management, an attacking football philosophy, and a clear vision of its identity.
