The El Salvador national football team, known as La Selecta, is governed by the Federación Salvadoreña de Fútbol (FESFUT) and competes within CONCACAF. El Salvador has qualified for the FIFA World Cup twice, in 1970 and 1982, with their most notable World Cup match being a 10-1 defeat to Hungary in 1982. Despite not returning to the finals since, La Selecta has remained competitive in CONCACAF, regularly participating in Gold Cup tournaments. Home matches are played at Estadio Cuscatlán in San Salvador, one of Central America's largest stadiums with a capacity exceeding 53,000. The team has also won the CONCACAF Championship once, in 1943. Modern coaching and youth development efforts have sought to restore El Salvador to prominence in regional football.
