Independiente

Club Atlético Independiente, founded in 1905 in Avellaneda, Buenos Aires Province, is one of Argentina's most decorated football clubs. Known as El Rojo (The Red) or El Rey de Copas (The King of Cups), Independiente holds the world record for most Copa Libertadores titles, having won the tournament seven times (1964, 1965, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1984). They also won the Intercontinental Cup in 1973 and 1984. The club plays home matches at the Estadio Libertadores de América in Avellaneda, which holds 52,364 spectators. Legendary figures include Ricardo Bochini and Ricky Villa. Independiente have also won 16 Argentine Primera División titles. In recent years the club has faced financial challenges but retains a massive, passionate supporter base and remains one of the most historically significant clubs in South American football history.
