Portugal's national football team, governed by the Federação Portuguesa de Futebol and founded in 1921, is one of Europe's premier sides. Their greatest triumph came at Euro 2016, when they defeated France in the final on home soil in Paris, becoming European Champions for the first time. Portugal also won the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019. The team reached the semi-finals of the 1966 World Cup, led by Eusébio, arguably their greatest ever player. The modern era has been defined by Cristiano Ronaldo, the all-time leading international goalscorer, alongside talents like Luís Figo, Rui Costa, and Bruno Fernandes. Portugal reached the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals and consistently challenge for major honours.
