Portugal vs Croatia
Match Report
Portugal edged Croatia 2-1 in a breathless Round of 32 thriller at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Toronto, with Gonçalo Ramos heading in the winner deep in added time to keep Cristiano Ronaldo's final World Cup campaign very much alive.
Ivan Perišić gave Croatia the lead with a composed left-footed finish in the 54th minute. Portugal leveled in the 65th minute when Ronaldo — in his first-ever knockout-stage World Cup goal — buried a penalty after Renato Veiga was fouled in the box. Ramos then settled it in the 94th minute, meeting a perfectly weighted cross from Rafael Leão with a firm header.
The drama didn't end there. Croatia had three goals disallowed for offside throughout the match, including a gut-wrenching VAR reversal deep in stoppage time that sent Croatian fans into fury.
For Portugal, it's a mouth-watering Round of 16 showdown with Spain on July 7. For Croatia, the tournament is over — and with it, almost certainly Luka Modric's storied World Cup career.
