Malawi
The Malawi national football team, known as the Flames, is governed by Football Association of Malawi and has competed under FIFA since 1967. Malawi participated in the Africa Cup of Nations 2021 in Cameroon, reaching the group stage in only their second AFCON appearance. The team drew against Senegal, eventual champions, earning admiration across Africa. Malawi's notable players include Gabadinho Mhango, who was top scorer in the South African Premier Soccer League, and Gerald Phiri. The team plays home matches at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre and Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe. Despite limited resources compared to larger African football nations, Malawi has maintained competitive participation in COSAFA Cup, winning the tournament in 2019. The federation continues investing in youth development and coaching education to ensure consistent improvement in qualifying campaigns.
