Mamelodi Sundowns needed extra time to see off a stubborn Polokwane side in their MTN8 quarter-final, eventually winning 3-2 at Lucas Moripe Stadium after the sides could not be separated inside 90 minutes. It capped a dramatic first competitive outing of Sundowns' season.
Bonginkosi Dlamini shocked the hosts with an early strike for Polokwane in the 7th minute, before Teboho Mokoena leveled things on 22 minutes and Antonio Van Wyk turned the game around nine minutes later. Polokwane refused to fold, as Tidimalo Molokwane restored parity at 2-2 in the 60th minute to force extra time, where Sundowns finally found the decisive breakthrough in the 113th minute.
The win sends Sundowns through to the MTN8 semi-finals, a welcome return to action after their league opener against Marumo Gallants was postponed. For Polokwane, it's a cup exit despite arriving full of confidence off a league win over Richards Bay.
