Canada vs Chile
Match Report
Canada opened a new post-World Cup chapter with a 1-0 win over Chile at BMO Field, though the real story was how the visitors imploded, playing more than half the match with two fewer men and still nearly hanging on. Canada dominated the extra numbers for long stretches but couldn't turn the advantage into a bigger scoreline.
Jonathan David broke through in the 12th minute, tapping in a rebound after Cyle Larin's shot was parried by goalkeeper Christian Bravo, capping a move started by Ralph Priso's long ball and continued through Jacob Shaffelburg. Chile's night unraveled from there: Lucas Cepeda was sent off in the 35th minute for a reckless, bloodying challenge on Richie Laryea, and Gabriel Suazo followed early in the second half after picking up a second yellow.
It was an emotional occasion for Canada too, with David pausing to hold up a jersey for injured teammate Derek Cornelius, and veteran Junior Hoilett given a farewell after 11 years in the squad. A tidy, if unspectacular, launch to Jesse Marsch's new cycle, while Chile heads home with plenty of discipline to sort out.
