Al Kholood raced into a commanding lead and held on for a 3-2 win over Al Taawon, with the hosts looking utterly dominant for an hour before a late fright turned this into a proper thriller.
Edgaras Utkus opened the scoring in the 21st minute, finished off a John Buckley assist, before Iker Kortajarena doubled the lead in the 30th. Shaquille Pinas then missed a penalty around the 40-minute mark but made amends moments later, tapping in right before the break to send Al Kholood in 3-0 up at halftime. Al Taawon responded after the restart as Abderrazak Hamdallah pulled two goals back, in the 52nd minute and again deep into stoppage time, capping a personal brace that earned him Player of the Match honours despite the defeat.
It's an encouraging response from Al Kholood after their opening-round draw, while Al Taawon will rue a sluggish start that undid a spirited fightback.
