Sporting CP made home advantage count at Alvalade, brushing aside Nacional 2-0 in a game they controlled from the opening whistle. The visitors barely threatened, and the tie was effectively settled well before halftime once the hosts won a penalty. Luis Suárez stepped up to convert from the spot in the 32nd minute after Léo Santos brought down Maxi Araújo in the box. Sporting doubled their advantage soon after the restart, in the 49th minute, when Suárez drove forward from a long ball out of defence before squaring for Flávio Gonçalves to tap home. No cards of real consequence disrupted the flow, and Rui Borges freshened things up late on with Fotis Ioannidis and Nestory Irankunda coming off the bench to see out the win. The result keeps Sporting CP isolated in second place with 13 points, three clear of Benfica with a game in hand for the Eagles. Nacional, meanwhile, remain stuck in 10th on just four points as they continue searching for consistency under interim boss Bruno Abreu.
