South Africa vs Canada
Match Report
A composed stoppage-time finish from Stephen Eustáquio sent Canada through with a 1-0 win over South Africa in the Round of 32 at Los Angeles Stadium. Alphonso Davies, returning from injury to make his tournament debut off the bench, immediately lifted Canada's attacking play in the final quarter-hour.
The Porto midfielder slotted home in the 90+2' after South Africa had frustrated Canada throughout. Aubrey Modiba had kept South Africa level with a vital goal-line clearance in the first half, and keeper Ronwen Williams denied Jonathan David with a smart stop. Oswin Appollis gave South Africa their clearest opening in the 62nd minute but shot wide — the night passed without red cards or penalties.
For Canada, the victory is historic — their first ever knockout-stage win at a World Cup. South Africa are eliminated, their tournament ending in the Round of 32. Canada now face either Morocco or the Netherlands in Houston on July 4.
