A memorable night for visiting fans at The Oval as RFS came from behind to win 2-1 in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League qualifier against Glentoran. The decisive factor was a clinical brace from Mārtiņš Ķigurs, who proved the difference on a competitive Belfast evening.
It was Glentoran who struck first — Zeno Ibsen Rossi broke the deadlock in the 38th minute to lift the home crowd. But RFS hit back almost immediately: Ķigurs equalized right on the stroke of half-time, then scored the winner in the 70th minute to put the Latvians ahead for good. The game grew feisty late on, with both sides picking up multiple yellow cards — including Ķigurs himself in stoppage time.
With a 2-1 lead to take to Riga for the second leg on July 16, RFS are in the driving seat. Glentoran will need to be at their best to turn this tie around and keep their European run alive.
