Kairat Almaty edged out a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sutjeska at the Almaty Ortalyk Stadion in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League first qualifying round, with Marc Gual's stoppage-time strike sealing an extraordinary finale. A goalless first half gave little hint of what was to come. Lucas Áfrico finally broke the deadlock in the 76th minute, finishing off a neat assist from Ismail Bekbolat. Sutjeska refused to fold, however, and Marko Mrvaljevic levelled in the 90th minute — assisted by Deni Hocko — to send the Montenegrin visitors' bench into celebration. The joy was short-lived: just two minutes into stoppage time, Gual collected another Bekbolat delivery and put the ball away to restore the home side's lead. Four yellow cards added to the feisty atmosphere throughout. Kairat now carry a one-goal advantage into the second leg, while Sutjeska — who showed real character to equalise so late — must go again in Niksic and win to keep their Champions League dream alive.
