Lens kicked off the Ligue 1 season in style, thumping Auxerre 5-2 at Stade Bollaert-Delelis behind a Florian Thauvin brace. The captain calmly slotted home an early penalty, and the hosts never looked back, cruising to a statement opening-day win.
Thauvin opened the scoring from the spot in the 12th minute before Auxerre's afternoon unraveled further when Christ Makosso was sent off in the 35th for a professional foul as last man. Ivanovic (49') and Abdulhamid (54') doubled the damage after the break. Namaso pulled one back from the penalty spot (60') and Sy added another (69'), but Ganiou (66') and a retaken Thauvin penalty late on, after the goalkeeper was flagged for encroaching, sealed the rout.
It's a dream start for Lens under new boss Toppmöller, provisionally second in the table already. For Auxerre and former Lens coach Will Still, a red card and a porous defense made for a miserable reunion.
