Match Report
Netherlands survived a frantic finish to beat Uzbekistan 2-1 in a New York friendly, with Cody Gakpo netting two penalties — including a dramatic stoppage-time winner — in their final World Cup warm-up.
Gakpo had given Netherlands the lead from the spot in the 32nd minute, but the match turned ugly in the 86th when Guus Til received a straight red card for handball, leaving Oranje down to ten men.
Uzbekistan made the most of the advantage when Igor Sergeev levelled at 1-1 in the 90+2'. But Gakpo had the final word, stepping up coolly for a second penalty in the 90+7' to seal the win and reach 20 international goals.
The Netherlands leave New York with confidence ahead of their World Cup opener, though Til's looming suspension and a 66th-minute injury to goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen cast a slight shadow on the result.
