Match Report
A stunning 90th-minute free kick from Casper Nielsen earned Standard Liège a dramatic 1-1 draw at Genk on Saturday, snatching a point the visitors had barely looked like getting for much of the afternoon in this Europe Playoff clash.
Genk had gone ahead when Aaron Bibout nodded home from a Junya Ito cross in the 73rd minute — the same player who had rattled the post after just 44 seconds. The hosts spurned a golden chance to put it to bed when Heymans missed a sitter around the hour mark. Standard had their own moments, with a Karamoko effort deflected onto the bar, before Nielsen curled a magnificent free kick over the wall and into the top corner to make it level.
The result leaves Genk three points clear at the top of the Europe Playoffs, but they will feel the sting of dropped home points. For Standard, it is a precious point that keeps their European ambitions alive — though rivals Westerlo, level with the Liège side, can still leapfrog them later in the round.
