Match Report
Santa Fe picked up a hard-fought 1-0 win at the Estadio Campeón del Siglo, delivering a result that sent Peñarol crashing out of the Copa Libertadores on the final matchday of Group E.
Alexis Zapata broke the deadlock in the 12th minute, hammering a composed left-footed shot from the edge of the area to put the visitors in front. Peñarol pressed relentlessly in the second half and rattled the crossbar in the 85th minute, but goalkeeper Andrés Mosquera stood firm with a string of vital saves. The atmosphere turned ugly late on when an object was thrown from the stands toward the Santa Fe keeper, though no red cards were issued.
The joy was tempered for the Colombian side. Platense's simultaneous 2-0 win over Corinthians nudged Santa Fe down to third in the group, sending them into the Copa Sudamericana playoffs rather than the Libertadores round of 16. Peñarol, stranded at the bottom with just three points, exit the competition entirely.
