Match Report
Corinthians brushed aside a severely depleted Peñarol 2-0 at Neo Química Arena, extending their perfect start to the Copa Libertadores group stage. It was a commanding display from the Brazilians, who wrapped the contest up inside the opening half-hour.
Gustavo Henrique headed home from a Rodrigo Garro free kick to open the scoring on 11 minutes. Jesse Lingard doubled the advantage at 24 minutes, converting calmly after a fine pass from Yuri Alberto. A brief moment of controversy arrived at 15 minutes when André's strike was ruled out for handball in the build-up. Goalkeeper Aguerre made several fine saves to prevent a heavier defeat as Corinthians kept pressing.
The result leaves Corinthians top of Group E with nine points from three games, firmly on course for the knockout rounds. For Peñarol, who arrived missing seven players through injury and suspension, the hole in the standings only gets deeper.
