Match Report

Kai Havertz rescued a point for Arsenal with a last-gasp penalty against his former club as Bayer Leverkusen and the Gunners played out a 1-1 draw in the Champions League round of 16 first leg at the BayArena. Leverkusen struck first through captain Robert Andrich, who powered home a thumping header from a corner just seconds after the restart (46'). Arsenal struggled to create clear chances for much of the evening, managing just one shot on target all night. The Gunners were thrown a lifeline in the 89th minute when Malik Tillman's rash sliding challenge brought down Noni Madueke inside the box. Havertz stepped up to coolly convert from the spot against the club where he began his career. The draw leaves everything to play for in the second leg in London. Arsenal will feel fortunate to take an away goal back to the Emirates, while Leverkusen will rue not holding on to their slender advantage.
