Iran delivered a ruthless performance in Antalya, demolishing Costa Rica 5-0 in an international friendly that was effectively over before half-time. Mehdi Taremi was the star of the show, netting twice from the penalty spot to cap a devastating first-half blitz.
Ali Gholizadeh opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a composed finish, and Taremi doubled the lead from the spot eight minutes later. Mohammad Mohebi made it three on 31 minutes before Taremi converted a second penalty just three minutes later to send Team Melli into the break 4-0 up.
Mehdi Ghayedi completed the rout early in the second half, smashing home in the 54th minute to make it five. Costa Rica had no answer all evening.
A confidence-boosting display for Iran as they fine-tune their preparations, while Costa Rica will have plenty to reflect on after a chastening night in Turkey.
