Match Report
Canada came from two goals down to salvage a 2-2 draw against Iceland in a lively friendly at BMO Field on Saturday. Jonathan David converted twice from the penalty spot in the second half to cancel out Orri Óskarsson's early brace and spare the hosts' blushes.
Óskarsson struck in the 9th and 21st minutes to give Iceland a commanding first-half lead and silence the Toronto crowd. Canada regrouped after the break, winning a penalty when Tajon Buchanan was fouled by Mikael Ellertsson. David made no mistake from twelve yards in the 66th minute, then stepped up again in the 75th after Hordur Magnusson clumsily brought down substitute Daniel Jebbison.
The comeback was soured when Buchanan saw a straight red in the 81st minute for raising an elbow to Ellertsson's face, leaving Canada to see out the closing stages with ten men.
A spirited fightback for the hosts, but Canada will know they cannot afford slow starts once the World Cup kicks off on home soil this summer. For Iceland, Óskarsson's clinical finishing offered plenty of encouragement.
