Match Report
England were denied victory in agonising fashion as Uruguay snatched a 1-1 draw deep into stoppage time at Wembley on Friday night. What should have been a feel-good story turned sour in the cruellest way possible for Ben White, whose dramatic return to the international fold will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.
White had silenced the boo-boys in the 81st minute, poking home from a corner to mark his first England appearance since March 2022 with a goal. The Arsenal defender had been jeered by sections of the 80,000-plus crowd when he came on as a second-half substitute, making the strike all the more satisfying — briefly.
But the script flipped in the 94th minute when White clattered into Federico Viñas inside the box, and Uruguay captain Federico Valverde stepped up to bury the resulting penalty and rescue a point for La Celeste.
It was a gut-punch ending for Thomas Tuchel's side, who dominated possession but lacked cutting edge for long stretches. With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, England will need sharper finishing — and cooler heads — when the stakes get real this summer.
