Portland Timbers vs Whitecaps (USSF)
Match Report
Vancouver Whitecaps steamrolled Portland Timbers 4-1 at Providence Park on Saturday night, kicking off their Cascadia Cup title defense in emphatic fashion. Brian White led the charge with a clinical brace, opening the scoring in the 21st minute before sealing the rout late on in the 87th.
Tristan Blackmon made it 2-0 early in the second half (49'), bundling in after his initial effort was saved, and Sebastian Berhalter added a third in the 63rd minute following a slick solo run from Aziel Jackson. Berhalter also registered an assist on White's opener, pulling the strings all evening. Portland debutant Eric Izoita smashed in a stunning long-range consolation in the 71st minute, but it was merely a footnote in a lopsided affair.
The Timbers looked disjointed with a makeshift lineup and managed just two shots on target all night, while Vancouver's 55% possession told the story of their dominance. It was a bruising evening for Portland, who picked up five yellow cards as frustration boiled over.
Vancouver will carry serious momentum into the early weeks of the season, while Portland have plenty to fix before their next outing.
