New Zealand vs Egypt
Match Report
Egypt staged a stunning second-half comeback at BC Place, Vancouver, to beat New Zealand 3-1 and claim their first-ever World Cup victory. Mohamed Salah was the difference-maker, finishing a goal and setting up another to end a decades-long wait.
Finn Surman gave New Zealand an early lead with a 15th-minute header from a corner. Egypt equalised when Mostafa Zico nodded in unmarked from a Mohamed Hany cross in the 58th minute, before Salah slotted home after a sharp exchange with Zico in the 67th. Trezeguet added a third in the 82nd, diving to head in from Salah's corner delivery. No red cards or penalties featured.
It's a landmark result for Egypt, who had never won at a World Cup before — across appearances in 1934, 1990, and 2018. Salah, 34, became the oldest African player to score and assist in a World Cup match. New Zealand competed well in the first half but couldn't hold off the Pharaohs, leaving Group G wide open.
