Villarreal snatched a dramatic late point at Mendizorroza as Nicolas Pépé struck deep into stoppage time to earn a 1-1 draw against Alavés in La Liga's Round 28 Friday night fixture.
The hosts took a first-half lead when Villarreal defender Rafa Marín turned the ball into his own net on 40 minutes. Alavés dug in defensively after the break but picked up four yellow cards as the contest grew increasingly fractious.
Just when it looked like the Basque side would hold on for a crucial three points, Pépé popped up in the eighth minute of added time to break home hearts and level the scores at Mendizorroza.
The draw does little for either side's ambitions. Villarreal stay fourth on 55 points but miss the chance to close the gap on Atlético Madrid, while Alavés remain 16th on 28 points and without a win in seven matches.
