Lille pulled off a dramatic 2-1 comeback at the Stade Vélodrome on Sunday, with substitute Olivier Giroud heading home the winner four minutes from time to leave the home fans stunned.
Ethan Nwaneri broke the deadlock for Marseille in the 43rd minute, finishing smartly from Igor Paixão's pass to end a five-match goalless run. The lead was short-lived, though — Thomas Meunier capitalised on a Leonardo Balerdi error to equalise just four minutes into the second half.
The decisive blow came in the 86th minute when Meunier swung in a cross and Giroud, introduced from the bench, rose at the far post to glance a header into the bottom corner. At 39, the veteran showed his killer instinct remains razor-sharp.
The win lifts Lille to within two points of third-placed Marseille, blowing the Champions League qualification race wide open heading into the final stretch of the season.
