Match Report
Paul Nebel struck deep into the second half to hand Mainz a dramatic 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in Sunday's Rhein-Main derby at the MEWA Arena. The 22-year-old's 89th-minute winner sent the home crowd into raptures and extended Mainz's unbeaten home run to nine matches in all competitions.
Nebel had opened the scoring after just six minutes, his right-footed effort deflecting off Arthur Theate and looping over goalkeeper Michael Zetterer. Frankfurt hit back through Nathaniel Brown in the 20th minute, finishing first time from Jean-Matteo Bahoya's cutback.
The visitors looked the more dangerous side after the break, with Ritsu Doan a constant threat and Fares Chaibi heading against the crossbar. But Nebel had the final say, pouncing on a rebound after Nelson Weiper's header was saved to spark pandemonium.
The win lifts Mainz to 11th with a six-point cushion over the drop zone. For Frankfurt, defeat leaves them seventh and eight points adrift of European qualification with seven games remaining.
