Match Report

Werder Bremen stormed to a stunning 4-1 victory at the Alte Försterei, dismantling ten-man Union Berlin to climb out of the Bundesliga relegation zone. András Schäfer's straight red card just 19 minutes in turned the match completely on its head. Derrick Köhn had given Union Berlin an 18th-minute lead from the penalty spot, but the advantage lasted barely a minute before Schäfer was dismissed for a reckless lunge on Jens Stage. Olivier Deman equalised on 31 minutes with a clinical strike into the top corner, and Stage powered home a header from a Cameron Puertas corner to put Bremen ahead before the break. Marco Grüll made it three in the 67th minute after sharp work from Romano Schmid, before 18-year-old Patrice Čović netted his first Bundesliga goal deep into stoppage time to complete the rout. Back-to-back wins lift Bremen to 13th and out of the bottom three. For Union, a miserable afternoon at home leaves them with plenty to ponder as the relegation battle intensifies.
