Marseille ground out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Auxerre at the Orange Vélodrome on Friday night, extending their winning run to three straight in Ligue 1. Substitute Amine Gouiri proved the difference, breaking the deadlock in the 79th minute with a close-range volley after Igor Paixão's cross deflected kindly into his path.
Auxerre goalkeeper Donovan Léon produced an outstanding display to keep his side in the contest, denying Mason Greenwood with a superb stop from 20 metres in the second half. The visitors even thought they had grabbed a dramatic equaliser when Bryan Okoh bundled the ball home at the back post, but the effort was ruled out for handball.
The result consolidates third-placed Marseille's push for Champions League qualification under new boss Habib Beye, while 16th-placed Auxerre remain locked in a tense relegation battle with the bottom half closing in.
