Sunderland stunned St James' Park with a dramatic 90th-minute winner to beat Newcastle 2-1 and complete a historic league double over their fierce rivals. Brian Brobbey's late strike sparked pandemonium among the travelling fans and sealed the Black Cats' first derby win on Tyneside in a decade.
Anthony Gordon had given the Magpies the perfect start on 10 minutes, pouncing on a Luke O'Nien error. But Chemsdine Talbi levelled in the 57th minute after Aaron Ramsdale could only parry a corner into his path, and Sunderland completed the turnaround when Brobbey struck in the final minute.
The result caps a miserable week for Newcastle, who were thrashed 7-2 by Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday. They now sit below Sunderland in the Premier League table, with European qualification hopes fading fast.
