Match Report

Danny Welbeck rolled back the years with a clinical brace as Brighton beat Liverpool 2-1 at the Amex Stadium. The veteran striker proved the difference on a frustrating afternoon for Arne Slot's side, who have now gone three league games without a win. Welbeck opened the scoring on 14 minutes, rising above Ibrahima Konate to head home from a cross. Liverpool responded when Milos Kerkez pounced on a sloppy headed backpass from Lewis Dunk and lobbed goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to make it 1-1 on the half hour. Brighton retook the lead in the 56th minute. Yankuba Minteh's delivery from the left was nodded back across the six-yard box by Jack Hinshelwood, and Welbeck was left completely unmarked to tap home. Liverpool suffered a further blow when Hugo Ekitike limped off injured. The win lifts Brighton to 43 points and keeps their European push firmly alive. For Liverpool, stuck on 49 and already without Mohamed Salah and Alisson through injury, the top-four race is getting tighter by the week.
