Match Report
Newcastle United ended a 14-year wait for a win at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea fell to a 0-1 defeat on Saturday. Anthony Gordon's cool 18th-minute finish proved the difference in a textbook away performance from the Magpies.
The goal was a thing of beauty. Tino Livramento's incisive pass caught Chelsea skipper Reece James flat-footed, releasing Joe Willock clear in behind. Willock drew goalkeeper Robert Sánchez before squaring to Gordon, who rolled the ball home with an impudent flick into an empty net.
Chelsea huffed and puffed but continued their maddening habit of underperforming in front of goal, racking up 1.43 xG without reward on a frustrating afternoon at home.
The result lifts Newcastle to ninth on 42 points, just two off the European places, while Chelsea remain fifth but will feel the heat building after another costly home stumble.
