Spain are world champions again, edging past Argentina 1-0 in an extra-time thriller at MetLife Stadium. It took until the second period of extra time for the deadlock to break, with goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez producing a tournament-record 11 saves to keep Argentina alive.
The decisive moment came in the 106th minute, when Ferran Torres met a header from substitute Nico Williams and finished left-footed past Martínez. Argentina's task got harder five minutes into stoppage time at the end of normal time, when Enzo Fernández was shown a second yellow card and sent off, leaving his side to survive extra time a man down.
For Spain, it's a second World Cup title and validation of a dominant, possession-heavy tournament in which they outshot Argentina 20-2 in the final alone. For Argentina, the defeat ends their hopes of becoming the first repeat champions since Brazil in 1962 — and quite possibly closes the book on Lionel Messi's World Cup career.
