A frantic opening and three major flashpoints made this Egypt–Iran Group G encounter far more dramatic than the 1-1 scoreline suggests. Both sides left Seattle having played out one of the tournament's most eventful draws so far.
Mahmoud Saber gave Egypt the lead in the 5th minute, tucking in a rebound off the post. Iran levelled almost immediately through Ramin Rezaeian, who slotted home from a tight angle in the 13th. Mostafa Shobeir then made a crucial penalty save to deny Mehdi Taremi, before Ahmed Fatouh was sent off in the 83rd to leave Egypt a man down. Deep in stoppage time Shoja Khalilzadeh headed what looked like a dramatic winner for Iran, but VAR ruled it out for offside.
The point is enough to send Egypt through as Group G runners-up behind Belgium. Iran finish third and must now wait on the best third-placed standings to discover whether their World Cup continues.
