Match Report
SC Freiburg stormed into their first-ever major European quarter-final with a sensational 5-1 thrashing of KRC Genk, overturning a first-leg deficit in emphatic style. Vincenzo Grifo stole the show by becoming the club's all-time leading scorer on a night the Europa-Park Stadion will never forget.
Matthias Ginter headed home a Grifo free-kick on 19 minutes before Igor Matanovic doubled the lead. Matte Smets pulled one back for Genk on 37 minutes, but the respite was short-lived.
Grifo pounced on a dreadful Genk giveaway early in the second half to write himself into the history books, Yuito Suzuki slotted a cool fourth on 52 minutes, and Maximilian Eggestein completed the rout from distance with 11 minutes remaining.
Freiburg will face Celta Vigo in the quarter-finals as their remarkable European journey continues. For Genk, a painful exit extends their winless away record against German opponents to five matches.
