Argentina survived an extraordinary scare in Atlanta, coming from two goals down to beat Egypt 3-2 in the World Cup Round of 16. Enzo Fernandez's stoppage-time header sealed the defending champions' most remarkable comeback in World Cup history.
Egypt had looked set for a stunning upset. Yasser Ibrahim headed them ahead on 15 minutes, and Mostafa Zico doubled the advantage in the 67th after VAR had wiped out another Egyptian goal earlier in the half. Lionel Messi compounded Argentina's misery by missing a penalty, his spot-kick saved by goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir. The comeback came in a breathless final quarter: Cristian Romero headed one back on 79', Messi fired in an equalizer four minutes later, and Fernandez then glanced a header from a Lautaro Martinez cross into the net in the 92nd.
Argentina march into the quarterfinals still chasing back-to-back titles, while Egypt bow out having pushed the champions to their absolute limit. The South Americans will face either Switzerland or Colombia in the last eight.
