The Finland national football team, governed by the Suomen Palloliitto (SPL/FBF) and affiliated with UEFA, achieved their greatest milestone when they qualified for their first major tournament, UEFA Euro 2020, held in 2021. Finland finished third in their group despite defeating Denmark in an emotionally charged match interrupted by Christian Eriksen's cardiac arrest. The team plays home matches at Helsinki Olympic Stadium and Tampere's Ratina Stadium. Notable players include Jari Litmanen, widely regarded as Finland's greatest footballer ever, as well as modern stars Teemu Pukki and Lukas Hradecky. Finland's style under coaches like Markku Kanerva has emphasised hard work, organisation, and exploiting set pieces. Their Euro 2020 appearance marked a breakthrough for Finnish football after decades of near-misses in qualifying campaigns.
