The Ukraine national football team, known as the Yellow-Blues, is governed by the Ukrainian Association of Football, established in 1991 following independence. Ukraine's finest World Cup performance came in 2006, when they reached the quarter-finals in Germany, losing to Italy who went on to win the tournament. Andriy Shevchenko, one of the greatest strikers in history and a Ballon d'Or winner in 2004, remains the country's most iconic footballer. Ukraine qualified for the 2020 UEFA European Championship and reached the quarter-finals. Despite the ongoing war with Russia, the national team has continued to compete, qualifying for UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany and reaching the round of 16. Players like Oleksandr Zinchenko and Mykhailo Mudryk carry the torch for modern Ukrainian football.
