RB Leipzig
RB Leipzig represents one of the most remarkable stories in modern European football — a club that did not exist before 2009 and yet within seven years had climbed from the fifth tier of German football to the Bundesliga, and within a decade had reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. The club was founded on 19 May 2009 after the energy drink company Red Bull GmbH purchased the playing rights of fifth-division side SSV Markranstädt, a small club from the Leipzig area. Red Bull's stated ambition was to build a top-flight club in the former East German city of Leipzig within eight years. That goal was achieved in seven: in May 2016 RB Leipzig won promotion to the Bundesliga after finishing second in the second division. Their immediate impact in the top flight was astonishing — in their first-ever Bundesliga season of 2016-17 they went unbeaten in their opening 13 league matches, briefly topped the table and became the first club from the former East Germany to lead the Bundesliga since 1991, ultimately finishing second behind Bayern Munich and qualifying for the Champions League at the first attempt. Despite being one of football's youngest clubs, RB Leipzig's trophy cabinet has grown meaningfully in a short time. The club won their first major honour in 2022 when they defeated SC Freiburg in the DFB-Pokal final, and they immediately retained the cup in 2023 with a 2-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, becoming the first club since Werder Bremen in 1991 and 1994 to win back-to-back DFB-Pokal titles. In August 2023 they also claimed the DFL-Supercup with a 3-0 thrashing of Bayern Munich. Their European journey has been equally impressive: under coaches Ralph Hasenhuttl and then Julian Nagelsmann, Leipzig became a consistent Champions League presence, culminating in their sensational run to the semi-finals in the 2019-20 tournament held in Lisbon, before being eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain. The club's model under sporting director Ralf Rangnick — built on high-intensity pressing, tactical sophistication, and the development of young players — became widely admired and imitated across football. RB Leipzig play their home matches at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, a stadium with a capacity of approximately 47,069 spectators. The arena was originally built in 1956 as the Zentralstadion and was one of the largest stadiums in East Germany, hosting international matches and athletics events. It was substantially redeveloped between 2000 and 2004 and again reconfigured for football use in 2010 when Red Bull took over. Located in central Leipzig, the Red Bull Arena provides a modern and comfortable matchday experience. The club has attracted and developed a series of outstanding players who subsequently moved to elite clubs worldwide, including Timo Werner, Emil Forsberg, Dayot Upamecano, Christopher Nkunku — sold to Chelsea for a club record €60 million in 2023 — and Dani Olmo. Hungarian striker Dominik Szoboszlai, who joined Liverpool in 2023 for £60 million, was also developed at the club. Coach Marco Rose succeeded Domenico Tedesco before the 2023-24 season. Though Leipzig finished seventh in the 2024-25 Bundesliga — missing European competition for the first time since their promotion — the club's broader project and infrastructure ensures they remain a significant force in German and European football.
