The team caused one of football's great upsets in their very first competitive match in 1990, defeating Austria 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier. Despite their small population of around 50,000, the Faroe Islands have consistently competitive in UEFA Nations League play, earning promotion from League D to League C. Home matches are played at Tórsvøllur in Tórshavn, which holds 6,000 spectators. Notable players include Fróði Benjaminsen, Pól Jóannes Justinussen, and Klæmint Olsen.
