The Timor-Leste national football team, governed by the Federação Futebol Timor-Leste (FFTL) and affiliated with both FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation, represents one of the world's youngest nations on the international stage. Football was played informally during Portuguese colonial rule, but organised competition only truly took off after independence in 2002. Timor-Leste competes in AFC Asian Cup qualifiers and FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns, primarily battling opponents in the AFC's lower-seeded pools. The team has gradually improved its FIFA ranking from the bottom tier, with notable morale-boosting wins against similarly developing nations. Home matches are typically staged at the Estadio Nacional Raimundos Oki in Dili. The squad is built almost entirely from domestic-based players, and youth development programmes backed by FIFA and AFC are central to long-term growth.
