Cyprus
The Cyprus national football team represents the island nation in international football under the governance of the Cyprus Football Association, a UEFA and FIFA member since 1948. Cyprus plays home fixtures at GSP Stadium in Nicosia (22,859 capacity) and has traditionally occupied the lower-middle tier of European football. The team has never qualified for a major international tournament, though it has produced several players who have made careers in European leagues, including Kostas Makrides and Pieros Sotiriou. In recent years Cyprus has shown marked improvement, recording impressive results in UEFA Nations League campaigns and EURO qualifiers. Cyprus's league system, the First Division, has grown in stature with clubs like Apoel FC having reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in 2012.
