Corinthians
Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, founded on September 1, 1910, in São Paulo by five working-class railway workers inspired by a visiting English amateur club, plays at the modern 48,905-capacity Neo Química Arena in Itaquera, which hosted the opening match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The club has won seven Campeonato Brasileiro titles, 30 Campeonato Paulista championships, and achieved the pinnacle of South American and world football in 2012, winning the Copa Libertadores and then defeating Chelsea 1-0 in the FIFA Club World Cup final — the club's second world title. Iconic figures include Roberto Rivellino, the playmaker-philosopher Sócrates who led the radical Corinthians Democracy experiment, and Ronaldo Nazário, who returned for an emotional final chapter in 2009. With over 30 million supporters, Corinthians are one of the most powerfully supported clubs in all of South America.
