Bahrain
The Bahrain national football team is governed by the Bahrain Football Association and competes in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The team has made notable progress in Asian football, qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup on several occasions and reaching the quarter-finals in 2004. Bahrain came agonisingly close to qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, losing a two-legged play-off to New Zealand. The squad draws on players from the Bahrain Premier League as well as naturalised players, a common practice in Gulf football. Home matches are played at the National Stadium in Riffa. Notable figures include Ismaeel Abdullatif and A'ala Hubail, who have been key players for the national side. Bahrain continues to invest in football development as part of the country's broader sporting ambitions.
