River Plate
Club Atlético River Plate, founded on May 25, 1901, in Buenos Aires and nicknamed Los Millonarios for their early lavish spending on talent, plays at El Monumental — an 85,000-capacity arena in the Belgrano neighbourhood, Argentina's largest stadium and host of the 1978 World Cup final. The most successful club in Argentine football history with over 38 Primera División titles, River have also won the Copa Libertadores twice under Marcelo Gallardo (2015, 2018) — with the extraordinary 2018 final against Boca Juniors played at the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid. Their academy has launched the careers of Alfredo Di Stéfano, Enzo Fernández (sold to Chelsea for over £100 million), and Julián Álvarez. The Superclásico against Boca Juniors is one of the most watched football matches in the world, capturing the passionate spirit of Buenos Aires.
